About Surah Al-Waqi'ah

Al-Waqi'ah (“The Inevitable Event”) describes the Day of Judgement and the three groups of people on that day: the foremost, the people of the right, and the people of the left.

In the hadith

  • A narration that reciting Al-Waqi'ah every night protects from poverty is widely quoted, but hadith scholars have graded it weak. (Reported by Ibn as-Sunni and al-Bayhaqi (Shu'ab al-Iman))

We have created you, then why would you not confirm it?

    Afara-aitum maa tumnuun(a)

Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit?

    Aantum takhluquunahu am nahnul khaaliquun(a)

Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators?

It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated.

'Ala an nubaddila amtsaalakum wanunsyi-akum fii maa laa ta'lamuun(a)

Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about.

    Walaqad 'alimtumunnasyatal aula falaulaa tadzakkaruun(a)

You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it?

    Afara-aitum maa tahrutsuun(a)

Have you considered the seeds you till?

    Aantum tazra'uunahu am nahnuzzaari'uun(a)

Is it you or We Who make them grow?

    Lau nasyaa-u laja'alnaahu huthaaman fazhaltum tafakkahuun(a)

If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim:

    Innaa lamughramuun(a)

    “We have been penalised;

    Bal nahnu mahruumuun(a)

    nay; we have been undone!”

    Afara-aitumul maa-al-ladzii tasyrabuun(a)

Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink?

Aantum anzaltumuuhu minal muzni am nahnul munziluun(a)

Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down?

    Lau nasyaa-u ja'alnaahu ujaajan falaulaa tasykuruun(a)

If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks?

    Afara-aitumun-naarallatii tuuruun(a)

Did you consider the fire which you kindle?

Aantum ansya'tum syajaratahaa am nahnul munsyi-uun(a)

Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow?

    Nahnu ja'alnaahaa tadzkiratan wamataa'al(n)-lilmuqwiin(a)

We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy.

    Fasabbih biismi rabbikal 'azhiim(i)

Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord.

    Falaa uqsimu bimawaaqi'innujuum(i)

No! I swear by the positions of the stars –

    Wa-innahu laqasamun lau ta'lamuuna 'azhiimun

and this is indeed a mighty oath, if only you knew –

    Innahu laquraanun kariimun

that this indeed is a noble Qur'an,

    Fii kitaabin maknuunin

    inscribed in a well-guarded Book,

    Laa yamassuhu ilaal muthahharuun(a)

    which none but the pure may touch;

    Tanziilun min rabbil 'aalamiin(a)

a revelation from the Lord of the Universe.

    Afabihadzaal hadiitsi antum mudhinuun(a)

Do you, then, take this discourse in light esteem,

    Wataj'aluuna rizqakum annakum tukadz-dzibuun(a)

and your portion in it is simply that you denounce it as false?

    Falaulaa idzaa balaghatil hulquum(a)

Why, then, when the soul leaps up to the throat,

    Wa-antum hiina-idzin tanzhuruun(a)

the while you are helplessly watching that he is on the verge of death,

Wanahnu aqrabu ilaihi minkum walakin laa tubshiruun(a)

    – at that moment when We are closer to him than you, although you do not see (Us)

    Falaulaa in kuntum ghaira madiiniin(a)
