    Thaa siim miim

    Ta'. Sin. Mim.

    Tilka aayaatul kitaabil mubiin(i)

These are the verses of the Clear Book.

(O Muhammad), you will perhaps grieve yourself to death because these people do not believe.

In nasya' nunazzil 'alaihim minassamaa-i aayatan fazhallat a'naaquhum lahaa khaadhi'iin(a)

If We will, We can send down a Sign to them from heaven, so their necks will be humbled to it.

Wamaa ya'tiihim min dzikrin minar-rahmani muhdatsin ilaa kaanuu 'anhu mu'ridhiin(a)

Never does there come to them an admonition from the Merciful Lord but they turn away from it.

    Faqad kadz-dzabuu fasaya'tiihim anbaa-u maa kaanuu bihi yastahzi-uun(a)

They will soon come to know the truth of that which they have been scoffing at.

Awalam yarau ilal ardhi kam anbatnaa fiihaa min kulli zaujin kariimin

Do they not look at the earth, how We caused a variety of fine vegetation to grow from it (in abundance)?

Inna fii dzalika li-aayatan wamaa kaana aktsaruhum mu'miniin(a)

Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe.

    Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwal 'aziizur-rahiim(u)

Verily Your Lord is Infinitely Mighty, Most Compassionate.

    Wa-idz naada rabbuka muusa anii-atil qaumazh-zhaalimiin(a)

(Recount to them about the time) when Your Lord called Moses: "Go to the wrong-doing people,

    Qauma fir'auna alaa yattaquun(a)

the people of Pharaoh: do they have no fear?"

Qaala rabbi innii akhaafu an yukadz-dzibuun(i)

He said: "My Lord! I fear that they will brand me a liar.

Wayadhiiqu shadrii walaa yanthaliqu lisaanii fa-arsil ila haaruun(a)

My breast is constricted and my tongue is not fluent, so endow Messengership on Aaron.

    Walahum 'alai-ya dzanbun fa-akhaafu an yaqtuluun(i)

As for me, they hold the charge of a crime against me. I fear they will put me to death."

Qaala kalaa faadzhabaa biaayaatinaa innaa ma'akum mustami'uun(a)

He said: "Certainly not! So go both of you with Our Signs. We shall be with you listening to everything.

    Fa'tiyaa fir'auna faquulaa innaa rasuulu rabbil 'aalamiin(a)

Go, then, to Pharaoh and say to him: 'The Lord of the Universe has sent us

    An arsil ma'anaa banii israa-iil(a)

that you let the Children of Israel go with us.'"

Qaala alam nurabbika fiinaa waliidan walabitsta fiinaa min 'umurika siniin(a)

Pharaoh said: "Did we not bring you up among us when you were a child?

    Wafa'alta fa'latakallatii fa'alta wa-anta minal kaafiriin(a)

You spent many years of your life among us and then you committed that deed of yours. You are very ungrateful indeed."

    Qaala fa'altuhaa idzan wa-anaa minadh-dhaalliin(a)

Moses replied: "I committed that act erringly.

Fafarartu minkum lammaa khiftukum fawahaba lii rabbii hukman waja'alanii minal mursaliin(a)

Then I fled for fear of you. Then my Lord bestowed wisdom and authority on me and made me one of the Messengers.

Watilka ni'matun tamunnuhaa 'alai-ya an 'abbadta banii israa-iil(a)

Now this is the favour that you tauntingly remind me of: that you enslaved the Children of Israel!"

    Qaala fir'aunu wamaa rabbul 'aalamiin(a)

Pharaoh said: "And who is this Lord of the Universe?"

Qaala rabbus-samaawaati wal ardhi wamaa bainahumaa in kuntum muuqiniin(a)

Moses answered: "The Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them, if you were only to believe."

    Qaala liman haulahu alaa tastami'uun(a)

    Qaala rabbukum warabbu aabaa-ikumul au-waliin(a)

Moses said: "(He is) Your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore."

Qaala inna rasuulakumul-ladzii ursila ilaikum lamajnuunun

Pharaoh said to the audience: "This Messenger of yours who has been sent to you is simply mad."

Qaala rabbul masyriqi wal maghribi wamaa bainahumaa in kuntum ta'qiluun(a)

Moses continued: "(He is) the Lord of the east and the west, and all between them. If you only had any understanding!"

    Qaala la-iniittakhadzta ilahan ghairii aj'alannaka minal masjuuniin(a)

Pharaoh said: "If you take any god other than me, I will certainly make you one of those (who are rotting) in prison."

    Qaala awalau ji-atuka bisyai-in mubiinin

Moses said: "Even if I were to bring a Clear Sign to you?"

Qaala fa'ti bihi in kunta minash-shaadiqiin(a)

Pharaoh said: "Then bring it if you are truthful at all."

    Fa-alqa 'ashaahu fa-idzaa hiya tsu'baanun mubiinun

(No sooner had he said this than) Moses threw down his rod and behold, it was a veritable serpent,

    Wanaza'a yadahu fa-idzaa hiya baidhaa-u li-nnaazhiriin(a)

and he drew his hand (out of his armpit) and lo! it had become a shining object to the beholders.

Qaala lilmala-i haulahu inna hadzaa lasaahirun 'aliimun

Pharaoh said to the nobles around him: "Surely this man is a skilled magician

Yuriidu an yukhrijakum min ardhikum bisihrihi famaadzaa ta'muruun(a)

who wants to drive you out of your land by his magic. Tell us, what do you advise us?"

    Qaaluuu arjih wa-akhaahu waab'ats fiil madaa-ini haasyiriin(a)

They said: "Detain him and his brother for a while and send forth heralds to the cities

    Ya'tuuka bikulli sahhaarin 'aliimin

    to mobilise all skilled magicians."

    Fajumi'assaharatu limiiqaati yaumin ma'luumin

So the magicians were brought together on a particular day at a set time

    Waqiila li-nnaasi hal antum mujtami'uun(a)

and the people were told: "Will you join the assembly?

    La'allanaa nattabi'ussaharata in kaanuu humul ghaalibiin(a)

We may perhaps follow the religion of the magicians if they triumph."

Falammaa jaa-assaharatu qaaluuu lifir'auna a-inna lanaa ajran in kunnaa nahnul ghaalibiin(a)

Qaala lahum muusa alquu maa antum mulquun(a)

Moses said to them: "Throw down whatever you wish to throw."

    Fa-alqau hibaalahum wa'ishii-yahum waqaaluuu bi'izzati fir'auna innaa lanahnul ghaalibuun(a)

Thereupon they threw down their ropes and their rods, and said: "By the glory of Pharaoh, we shall prevail."

Fa-alqa muusa 'ashaahu fa-idzaa hiya talqafu maa ya'fikuun(a)

Thereafter, Moses threw down his rod and behold, it went about swallowing up all the false devices they had contrived.

    Fa-ulqiyassaharatu saajidiin(a)

Thereupon the magicians fell down in prostration,

    Qaaluuu aamannaa birabbil 'aalamiin(a)

saying: "We (now) believe in the Lord of the Universe,

    Rabbi muusa wahaaruun(a)

the Lord of Moses and Aaron."

Qaala aamantum lahu qabla an aadzana lakum innahu lakabiirukumul-ladzii 'allamakumussihra falasaufa ta'lamuuna aqath-thi'anna aidiyakum wa-arjulakum min khilaafin wal-ashallibannakum ajma'iin(a)

Pharaoh said: "You accepted the word of Moses even before I granted you the leave to do so. Surely he is your chief who has taught you magic. Soon shall you come to know. I shall cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides and shall crucify all of you."

Qaaluuu laa dhaira innaa ila rabbinaa munqalibuun(a)

They said: "We do not care, for we are bound to return to our Lord,

Innaa nathma'u an yaghfira lanaa rabbunaa khathaayaanaa an kunnaa au-walal mu'miniin(a)

and we surely expect that Our Lord will forgive us our sins for we are the first ones to believe."

Wa-a-uhainaa ila muusa an asri bi'ibaadii innakum muttaba'uun(a)

We revealed to Moses: "Set forth with My servants by night for you will be pursued."

    Fa-arsala fir'aunu fiil madaa-ini haasyiriin(a)

Then Pharaoh sent heralds to the cities (to mobilise troops)

    Inna ha'ulaa-i lasyirdzimatun qaliiluun(a)

saying: "These (Israelites) are only a small band of people

    Wa-innahum lanaa laghaa-izhuun(a)

who have certainly provoked our wrath.

    Wa-innaa lajamii'un haadziruun(a)

But we are a numerous host, ever on guard."

    Fa-akhrajnaahum min jannaatin wa'uyuunin

Thus did We drive them out of their gardens and springs

    Wakunuuzin wamaqaamin kariimin

and their treasures and excellent dwellings.

    Kadzalika wa-auratsnaahaa banii israa-iil(a)

This happened with them; (but on the other hand), We enabled the Children of Israel to inherit those bounties.

    Fa-atba'uuhum musyriqiin(a)

At sunrise they set off in pursuit of them

Falammaa taraa-al jam'aani qaala ashhaabu muusa innaa lamudrakuun(a)

and when the groups came face to face, the companions of Moses cried out: "We are overtaken!"

Qaala kalaa inna ma'iya rabbii sayahdiin(i)

Moses said: "Certainly not. My Lord is with me; He will direct me."

Fa-a-uhainaa ila muusa aniidhrib bi'ashaakal bahra faanfalaqa fakaana kullu firqin kath-thaudil 'azhiim(i)

Then We revealed to Moses, (commanding him): "Strike the sea with your rod." Thereupon the sea split up, and then each became like the mass of a huge mount.

    Wa-azlafnaa tsammaaakhariin(a)

We also brought the other party close to the same spot,

    Wa-anjainaa muusa waman ma'ahu ajma'iin(a)

and We delivered Moses and his companions, all of them,

    Tsumma aghraqnaaaakhariin(a)

    then We drowned the others.

Inna fii dzalika li-aayatan wamaa kaana aktsaruhum mu'miniin(a)

Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe.

    Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwal 'aziizur-rahiim(u)

Verily your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Ever Compassionate.

    Waatlu 'alaihim nabaa ibraahiim(a)

And recount to them the story of Abraham:

Idz qaala abiihi waqaumihi maa ta'buduun(a)

when he asked his father and his people: "What do you worship?"

Qaaluuu na'budu ashnaaman fanazhallu lahaa 'aakifiin(a)

They answered: "There are some idols that we worship and are devoted to them with constancy."

    Qaala hal yasma'uunakum idz tad'uun(a)

He asked: "Do they hear you when you call them

    Au yanfa'uunakum au yadhurruun(a)

or do they cause you any benefit or harm?"

Qaaluuu bal wajadnaa aabaa-anaa kadzalika yaf'aluun(a)

They answered: "No; but we found our forefathers doing so."

    Qaala afara-aitum maa kuntum ta'buduun(a)

Thereupon, Abraham said: "Have you seen (with your eyes) those whom you have been worshipping,

    Antum waaabaa'ukumul aqdamuun(a)

you and your forefathers of yore?

    Fa-innahum 'aduu-wun lii ilaa rabbal 'aalamiin(a)

They are all enemies to me; all, except the Lord of the Universe

    Al-ladzii khalaqanii fahuwa yahdiin(i)

    Who created me and Who guides me;

    Waal-ladzii huwa yuth'imunii wayasqiin(i)

Who gives me food and drink,
