Surah At-Takwir: Arabic, Transliteration & Translation

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

1. 81:1

   اِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْۖ

   Idzaasy-syamsu kuu-wirat

   When the sun shall be folded up,

2. 81:2

   وَاِذَا النُّجُوْمُ انْكَدَرَتْۖ

   Wa-idzaan-nujuumuun-kadarat

   when the stars shall scatter away,

3. 81:3

   وَاِذَا الْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْۖ

   Wa-idzaal jibaalu sui-yirat

   when the mountains shall be set in motion,

4. 81:4

   وَاِذَا الْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْۖ

   Wa-idzaal 'isyaaru 'uth-thilat

   when the ten-months pregnant camels shall be abandoned,

5. 81:5

   وَاِذَا الْوُحُوْشُ حُشِرَتْۖ

   Wa-idzaal wuhuusyu husyirat

   when the savage beasts shall be brought together,

6. 81:6

   وَاِذَا الْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْۖ

   Wa-idzaal bihaaru sujjirat

   when the seas shall be set boiling,

7. 81:7

   وَاِذَا النُّفُوْسُ زُوِّجَتْۖ

   Wa-idzaannufuusu zuu-wijat

   when the souls shall be rejoined (with their bodies),

8. 81:8

   وَاِذَا الْمَوْءٗدَةُ سُىِٕلَتْۖ

   Wa-idzaal mawuudatu su-ilat

   and when the girl-child buried alive shall be asked:

9. 81:9

   بِاَيِّ ذَنْۢبٍ قُتِلَتْۚ

   Biai-yi dzanbin qutilat

   for what offence was she killed?

10. 81:10

    وَاِذَا الصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْۖ

    Wa-idzaash-shuhufu nusyirat

    and when the scrolls of (men's) deeds shall be unfolded,

11. 81:11

    وَاِذَا السَّمَاۤءُ كُشِطَتْۖ

    Wa-idzaassamaa-u kusyithat

    and when Heaven is laid bare;

12. 81:12

    وَاِذَا الْجَحِيْمُ سُعِّرَتْۖ

    Wa-idzaal jahiimu su'iirat

    and Hell is stoked,

13. 81:13

    وَاِذَا الْجَنَّةُ اُزْلِفَتْۖ

    Wa-idzaal jannatu uzlifat

    and Paradise brought nigh:

14. 81:14

    عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّآ اَحْضَرَتْۗ

    'Alimat nafsun maa ahdharat

    then shall each person know what he has brought along.

15. 81:15

    فَلَآ اُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِۙ

    Falaa uqsimu bil khunnas(i)

    No indeed; I swear by the alternating stars

16. 81:16

    الْجَوَارِ الْكُنَّسِۙ

    Al-jawaaril kunnas(i)

    that hide,

17. 81:17

    وَالَّيْلِ اِذَا عَسْعَسَۙ

    Wallaili idzaa 'as'as(a)

    and by the night as it recedes,

18. 81:18

    وَالصُّبْحِ اِذَا تَنَفَّسَۙ

    Wash-shubhi idzaa tanaffas(a)

    and the morn as it breathes.

19. 81:19

    اِنَّهٗ لَقَوْلُ رَسُوْلٍ كَرِيْمٍۙ

    Innahu laqaulu rasuulin kariimin

    Verily this is the word of a noble message-bearer;

20. 81:20

    ذِيْ قُوَّةٍ عِنْدَ ذِى الْعَرْشِ مَكِيْنٍۙ

    Dzii quu-watin 'inda dziil 'arsyi makiinin

    one mighty and held in honour with the Lord of the Throne;

21. 81:21

    مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ اَمِيْنٍۗ

    Muthaa'in tsamma amiinin

    there he is obeyed and held trustworthy.

22. 81:22

    وَمَا صَاحِبُكُمْ بِمَجْنُوْنٍۚ

    Wamaa shaahibukum bimajnuunin

    (O people of Makkah), your companion is not mad;

23. 81:23

    وَلَقَدْ رَاٰهُ بِالْاُفُقِ الْمُبِيْنِۚ

    Walaqad raaahu bil afuqil mubiin(i)

    he indeed saw the message-bearer on the clear horizon;

24. 81:24

    وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى الْغَيْبِ بِضَنِيْنٍۚ

    Wamaa huwa 'alal ghaibi bidhaniinin

    nor does he grudge (conveying this knowledge about) the Unseen;

25. 81:25

    وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطٰنٍ رَّجِيْمٍۚ

    Wamaa huwa biqauli syaithaanin rajiimin

    nor is it a word of an accursed Satan.

26. 81:26

    فَاَيْنَ تَذْهَبُوْنَۗ

    Fa-aina tadzhabuun(a)

    Where to are you then heading?

27. 81:27

    اِنْ هُوَ اِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعٰلَمِيْنَۙ

    In huwa ilaa dzikrul(n)-lil'aalamiin(a)

    It is nothing but Good Counsel for everyone in the world,

28. 81:28

    لِمَنْ شَاۤءَ مِنْكُمْ اَنْ يَّسْتَقِيْمَۗ

    Liman syaa-a minkum an yastaqiim(a)

    for everyone of you who wishes to follow the Straight Way;

29. 81:29

    وَمَا تَشَاۤءُوْنَ اِلَّآ اَنْ يَّشَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ رَبُّ الْعٰلَمِيْنَ ࣖ

    Wamaa tasyaa-uuna ilaa an yasyaa-allahu rabbul 'aalamiin(a)

    but your wishing will not avail unless Allah, the Lord of the Universe, so wishes.
