Surah Al-Balad: Arabic, Transliteration & Translation

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

1. 90:1

   لَآ اُقْسِمُ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِۙ

   Laa uqsimu bihadzaal balad(i)

   Nay! I swear by this city

2. 90:2

   وَاَنْتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِۙ

   Wa-anta hillun bihadzaal balad(i)

   – this city wherein you have been rendered violable–

3. 90:3

   وَوَالِدٍ وَّمَا وَلَدَۙ

   Wawaalidin wamaa walad(a)

   and I swear by the parent and his offspring:

4. 90:4

   لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ فِيْ كَبَدٍۗ

   Laqad khalaqnaa-insaana fii kabadin

   Verily We have created man into toil and hardship.

5. 90:5

   اَيَحْسَبُ اَنْ لَّنْ يَّقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ اَحَدٌ ۘ

   Ayahsabu an lan yaqdira 'alaihi ahadun

   Does he think that no one can overpower him?

6. 90:6

   يَقُوْلُ اَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًاۗ

   Yaquulu ahlaktu maaalan lubadan

   He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.”

7. 90:7

   اَيَحْسَبُ اَنْ لَّمْ يَرَهٗٓ اَحَدٌۗ

   Ayahsabu an lam yarahu ahadun

   Does he believe that none has seen him?

8. 90:8

   اَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَّهٗ عَيْنَيْنِۙ

   Alam naj'al lahu 'ainain(i)

   Did We not grant him two eyes,

9. 90:9

   وَلِسَانًا وَّشَفَتَيْنِۙ

   Walisaanan wasyafatain(i)

   and a tongue and two lips?

10. 90:10

    وَهَدَيْنٰهُ النَّجْدَيْنِۙ

    Wahadainaahun-najdain(i)

    And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)?

11. 90:11

    فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ ۖ

    Falaaaqtahamal 'aqabat(a)

    But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep.

12. 90:12

    وَمَآ اَدْرٰىكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ ۗ

    Wamaa adraaka maal 'aqabat(u)

    And what do you know what that difficult steep is?

13. 90:13

    فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍۙ

    Fakku raqabatin

    It is freeing someone's neck from slavery;

14. 90:14

    اَوْ اِطْعَامٌ فِيْ يَوْمٍ ذِيْ مَسْغَبَةٍۙ

    Au ith'aamun fii yaumin dzii masghabatin

    or giving food on a day of hunger

15. 90:15

    يَّتِيْمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍۙ

    Yatiiman dzaa maqrabatin

    to an orphan near of kin;

16. 90:16

    اَوْ مِسْكِيْنًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍۗ

    Au miskiinan dzaa matrabatin

    or to a destitute lying in dust;

17. 90:17

    ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِۗ

    Tsumma kaana minal-ladziina aamanuu watawaashau bish-shabri watawaashau bil marhamat(i)

    and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion.

18. 90:18

    اُولٰۤىِٕكَ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَيْمَنَةِۗ

    Uula-ika ashhaabul maimanat(i)

    These are the People of the Right Hand.

19. 90:19

    وَالَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِاٰيٰتِنَا هُمْ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَشْئَمَةِۗ

    Waal-ladziina kafaruu biaayaatinaa hum ashhaabul masyamat(i)

    As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand.

20. 90:20

    عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌ ࣖ

    'Alaihim naarun mu'shadatun

    Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in.
