Surah Ash-Shams: Arabic, Transliteration & Translation

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

1. 91:1

   وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحٰىهَاۖ

   Wasy-syamsi wadhuhaahaa

   By the sun and its heat and brightness,

2. 91:2

   وَالْقَمَرِ اِذَا تَلٰىهَاۖ

   Wal qamari idzaa talaahaa

   and by the moon as it follows it;

3. 91:3

   وَالنَّهَارِ اِذَا جَلّٰىهَاۖ

   Wannahaari idzaa jalaahaa

   and by the day as it displays the sun's glory,

4. 91:4

   وَالَّيْلِ اِذَا يَغْشٰىهَاۖ

   Wallaili idzaa yaghsyaahaa

   and by the night as it envelopes the sun;

5. 91:5

   وَالسَّمَاۤءِ وَمَا بَنٰىهَاۖ

   Wassamaa-i wamaa banaahaa

   and by the sky and by Him Who made it;

6. 91:6

   وَالْاَرْضِ وَمَا طَحٰىهَاۖ

   Wal ardhi wamaa thahaahaa

   and by the earth and by Him Who stretched it out;

7. 91:7

   وَنَفْسٍ وَّمَا سَوّٰىهَاۖ

   Wanafsin wamaa sau-waahaa

   and by the soul and by Him Who perfectly proportioned it,

8. 91:8

   فَاَلْهَمَهَا فُجُوْرَهَا وَتَقْوٰىهَاۖ

   Fa-alhamahaa fujuurahaa wataqwaahaa

   and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety:

9. 91:9

   قَدْ اَفْلَحَ مَنْ زَكّٰىهَاۖ

   Qad aflaha man zakkaahaa

   He who purifies it will prosper,

10. 91:10

    وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ دَسّٰىهَاۗ

    Waqad khaaba man dassaahaa

    and he who suppresses it will be ruined.

11. 91:11

    كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُوْدُ بِطَغْوٰىهَآ ۖ

    Kadz-dzabat tsamuudu bithaghwaahaa

    In their presumptuous insolence the Thamud called the Truth a lie

12. 91:12

    اِذِ انْۢبَعَثَ اَشْقٰىهَاۖ

    Idziinba'atsa asyqaahaa

    when their arch-criminal rose up in rage.

13. 91:13

    فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُوْلُ اللّٰهِ نَاقَةَ اللّٰهِ وَسُقْيٰهَاۗ

    Faqaala lahum rasuulullahi naaqatallahi wasuqyaahaa

    Then Allah's Messenger warned them: “Hands off the she-camel and her drink!”

14. 91:14

    فَكَذَّبُوْهُ فَعَقَرُوْهَاۖ فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ بِذَنْۢبِهِمْ فَسَوّٰىهَاۖ

    Fakadz-dzabuuhu fa'aqaruuhaa fadamdama 'alaihim rabbuhum bidzanbihim fasau-waahaa

    But they rejected his statement as a lie and hamstrung the she-camel. For that crime their Lord rumbled down upon them, utterly razing them to the ground.

15. 91:15

    وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبٰهَا ࣖ

    Walaa yakhaafu 'uqbaahaa

    He has no fear of its sequel.
