Surah Al-Ghashiyah: Arabic, Transliteration & Translation

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

1. 88:1

   هَلْ اَتٰىكَ حَدِيْثُ الْغَاشِيَةِۗ

   Hal ataaka hadiitsul ghaasyiyat(i)

   Has the news of the overwhelming event reached you?

2. 88:2

   وُجُوْهٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ خَاشِعَةٌ ۙ

   Wujuuhun yauma-idzin khaasyi'atun

   Some faces that Day shall be downcast with fear,

3. 88:3

   عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ ۙ

   'Aamilatun naashibatun

   be toiling and worn-out;

4. 88:4

   تَصْلٰى نَارًا حَامِيَةً ۙ

   Tashla naaran haamiyatan

   they shall burn in a Scorching Fire;

5. 88:5

   تُسْقٰى مِنْ عَيْنٍ اٰنِيَةٍ ۗ

   Tusqa min 'ainin aaniyatin

   their drink shall be from a boiling spring.

6. 88:6

   لَيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ اِلَّا مِنْ ضَرِيْعٍۙ

   Laisa lahum tha'aamun ilaa min dharii'in

   They shall have no food except bitter dry thorns

7. 88:7

   لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِيْ مِنْ جُوْعٍۗ

   Laa yusminu walaa yughnii min juu'in

   that will neither nourish nor satisfy their hunger.

8. 88:8

   وُجُوْهٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ ۙ

   Wujuuhun yauma-idzin naa'imatun

   On that very Day some faces shall be radiant with joy,

9. 88:9

   لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ ۙ

   Lisa'yihaa raadhiyatun

   well-pleased with their striving.

10. 88:10

    فِيْ جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍۙ

    Fii jannatin 'aaliyatin

    They will be in a lofty Garden

11. 88:11

    لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيْهَا لَاغِيَةً ۗ

    Laa tasma'u fiihaa laaghiyatan

    wherein they shall hear no vain talk.

12. 88:12

    فِيْهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ ۘ

    Fiihaa 'ainun jaariyatun

    In it there shall be a flowing spring,

13. 88:13

    فِيْهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوْعَةٌ ۙ

    Fiihaa sururun marfuu'atun

    and couches raised high,

14. 88:14

    وَّاَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوْعَةٌ ۙ

    Wa-akwaabun maudhuu'atun

    and goblets laid out,

15. 88:15

    وَّنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوْفَةٌ ۙ

    Wanamaariqu mashfuufatun

    and cushions arrayed in rows,

16. 88:16

    وَّزَرَابِيُّ مَبْثُوْثَةٌ ۗ

    Wazaraabii-yu mabtsuutsatun

    and rich carpets levelled out.

17. 88:17

    اَفَلَا يَنْظُرُوْنَ اِلَى الْاِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْۗ

    Afalaa yanzhuruuna ila-ibili kaifa khuliqat

    Do (these unbelievers) not observe the camels: how they were created?

18. 88:18

    وَاِلَى السَّمَاۤءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْۗ

    Wa-ilassamaa-i kaifa rufi'at

    And the sky: how it was raised high?

19. 88:19

    وَاِلَى الْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْۗ

    Wa-ilal jibaali kaifa nushibat

    And the mountains: how they were fixed?

20. 88:20

    وَاِلَى الْاَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْۗ

    Wa-ilal ardhi kaifa suthihat

    And the earth: how it was spread out?

21. 88:21

    فَذَكِّرْۗ اِنَّمَآ اَنْتَ مُذَكِّرٌۙ

    Fadzakkir innamaa anta mudzakkirun

    So render good counsel, for you are simply required to counsel,

22. 88:22

    لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِمُصَيْطِرٍۙ

    Lasta 'alaihim bimushaithirin

    and are not invested with the authority to compel them.

23. 88:23

    اِلَّا مَنْ تَوَلّٰى وَكَفَرَۙ

    Ilaa man tawalla wakafar(a)

    But whoever will turn away (from the Truth),

24. 88:24

    فَيُعَذِّبُهُ اللّٰهُ الْعَذَابَ الْاَكْبَرَۗ

    Fayu'adz-dzibuhullahul 'adzaabal akbar(a)

    Allah will chastise him with the most terrible chastisement.

25. 88:25

    اِنَّ اِلَيْنَآ اِيَابَهُمْ

    Inna ilainaa iyaabahum

    Surely to Us is their return;

26. 88:26

    ثُمَّ اِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُمْ ࣖ

    Tsumma inna 'alainaa hisaabahum

    and then it is for Us to call them to account.
