    Al-haaqqat(u)

    The indubitable event!

    Maal haaqqat(u)

And what is that indubitable event?

    Wamaa adraaka maal haaqqat(u)

And what do you know what that indubitable event is?

    Kadz-dzabat tsamuudu wa'aadun bil qaari'at(i)

The Thamud and the Ad denied the (possibility of a) sudden calamity, calling it false.

    Fa-ammaa tsamuudu fauhlikuu bith-thaaghiyat(i)

    Then the Thamud were destroyed by an awesome upheaval;

Wa-ammaa 'aadun fauhlikuu biriihin sharsharin 'aatiyatin

and the Ad were destroyed by a furiously raging wind-storm

Sakh-kharahaa 'alaihim sab'a layaalin watsamaaniyata ai-yaamin husuuman fataral qauma fiihaa shar'a kaannahum a'jaazu nakhlin khaawiyatin

which He let loose upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession; so that (if you had been there) you might have seen people lying prostrate, as though they were uprooted trunks of hollowed palm trees.

    Fahal tara lahum min baaqiyatin

Do you now see any trace of them?

    Wajaa-a fir'aunu waman qablahu wal mu'tafikaatu bil khaathi-at(i)

Pharaoh and those before him and the people of the overturned habitations all engaged in the same great sin.

Fa'ashau rasuula rabbihim fa-akhadzahum akhdzatan raabiyatan

They did not follow the Messenger of their Lord, and so He seized them with a severe grip.

Innaa lammaa thaghal ma-au hamalnaakum fiil jaariyat(i)

Verily when the water rose to great heights, We bore you upon a floating vessel (i.e. the Ark)

    Linaj'alahaa lakum tadzkiratan wata'iyahaa udzunun waa'iyatun

so that We might make it an instructive event for you, and retentive ears might preserve its memory.

    Fa-idzaa nufikha fiish-shuuri nafkhatun waahidatun

So when the Trumpet is blown with a single blast

Wahumilatil ardhu wal jibaalu fadukkataa dakkatan waahidatan

and the earth and the mountains are carried aloft and are crushed to bits at one stroke,

    Fayauma-idzin waqa'atil waaqi'at(u)

    on that Day shall that indubitable event come to pass;

    Waansyaqqatissamaa-u fahiya yauma-idzin waahiyatun

when the sky will be rent asunder, the grip holding it together having loosened on that Day,

Wal malaku 'ala arjaa-ihaa wayahmilu 'arsya rabbika fauqahum yauma-idzin tsamaaniyatun

and the angels will stand on the sides, with eight of them bearing aloft the Throne of your Lord on that Day.

Yauma-idzin tu'radhuuna laa takhfa minkum khaafiyatun

That will be the Day when you shall be brought forth (before Allah) and no secret of yours shall remain hidden.

Fa-ammaa man uutiya kitaabahu biyamiinihi fayaquulu haa'umuuqrauu kitaabiyah

On that Day, he whose Record is given to him in his right hand will say: “Lo! Read my Record!

    Innii zhanantu annii mulaaqin hisaabiyah

Verily I was sure that I would be handed over my account.”

    Fii jannatin 'aaliyatin

    in a lofty Garden

    Quthuufuhaa daaniyatun

Kuluu waasyrabuu hanii-an bimaa aslaftum fiil ai-yaamil khaaliyat(i)

(They will be told): “Eat and drink with good cheer as a reward for the good deeds you did in the days that have passed by.”

Wa-ammaa man uutiya kitaabahu bisyimaalihi fayaquulu yaa laitanii lam uuta kitaabiyah

As for him whose Record will be given to him in his left hand, he will exclaim: “Would that I had never been given my Record,

    Walam adri maa hisaabiyah

and had not known my account.

    Yaa laitahaa kaanatil qaadhiyat(a)

Oh! Would that the death that came to me in the world had made an end of me!

    Maa aghna 'annii maaliyah

My riches have not availed me,

    Halaka 'annii sulthaaniyah

    and my authority has vanished.”

    Tsummal jahiima shalluuh(u)

then cast him in the Fire,

    Tsumma fii silsilatin dzar'uhaa sab'uuna dziraa'an faaslukuuh(u)

then fasten him with a chain, seventy cubits long.

Innahu kaana laa yu'minu billahil 'azhiim(i)

    He would not believe in Allah, the Most Great;

    Walaa yahudh-dhu 'ala tha'aamil miskiin(i)

nor would he urge the feeding of the poor.

Falaisa lahul yauma haa hunaa hamiimun

    Today he has been left here friendless;

    Walaa tha'aamun ilaa min ghisliinin

and has no food except the filth from the washing of wounds,

    Laa ya'kuluhu ilaal khaathi-uun(a)

which only the sinners will eat.”

    Falaa uqsimu bimaa tubshiruun(a)

But no; I swear by what you see,

    Wamaa laa tubshiruun(a)

and by what you do not see,

    Innahu laqaulu rasuulin kariimin

that this is the speech of an honourable Messenger,

not the speech of a poet. Little do you believe!

Walaa biqauli kaahinin qaliilaa maa tadzakkaruun(a)

Nor is this the speech of a soothsayer. Little do you reflect!

    Tanziilun min rabbil 'aalamiin(a)

It has been revealed by the Lord of the Universe.

    Walau taqau-wala 'alainaa ba'dhal aqaawiil(i)

And if he [i.e., the Prophets] had forged this Discourse and thereafter ascribed it to Us,

    Akhadznaa minhu bil yamiin(i)

We would surely have seized him by the right hand,

    Tsumma laqatha'naa minhul watiin(a)

    and then severed his life vein;

Famaa minkum min ahadin 'anhu haajiziin(a)

and not one of you would have been able to withhold Us from doing so.
