Saala saa-ilun bi'adzaabin waaqi'in
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement,
Lilkaafirina laisa lahu daafi'un
(a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert;
Minallahi dziil ma'aarij(i)
a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps,
Ta'rujul malaa-ikatu warruuhu ilaihi fii yaumin kaana miqdaaruhu khamsiina alfa sanatin
by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years.
Faashbir shabran jamiilaa
So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance.
Innahum yaraunahu ba'iidan
Verily they think that the chastisement is far off,
Yauma takuunussamaa-u kal muhl(i)
It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass,
Watakuunul jibaalu kal 'ihn(i)
and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool,
Walaa yasalu hamiimun hamiiman
and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends
Yubash-sharuunahum yawaddul mujrimu lau yaftadii min 'adzaabi yaumi-idzin bibaniih(i)
although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children,
Wafashiilati-hillatii tu'wiih(i)
and his kinsfolk who had stood by him,
Waman fiil ardhi jamii'an tsumma yunjiih(i)
and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself.
Tad'uu man adbara watawall(a)
It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated,
Inna-insaana khuliqa haluu'an
Verily man is impatient by nature:
Idzaa massahusy-syarru jazuu'an
bewailing when evil befalls him,
Wa-idzaa massahul khairu manuu'an
and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him,
Al-ladziina hum 'ala shalaatihim daa-imuun(a)
and are constant in their Prayer;
Waal-ladziina fii amwaalihim haqqun ma'luumun
and those in whose wealth there is a known right
Li-ssaa-ili wal mahruum(i)
for those that ask and those that are dispossessed,
Waal-ladziina yushaddiquuna biyaumiddiin(i)
those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense,
Waal-ladziina hum min 'adzaabi rabbihim musyfiquun(a)
and fear the chastisement of their Lord –
Inna 'adzaaba rabbihim ghairu ma'muunin
surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from –
Waal-ladziina hum lifuruujihim haafizhuun(a)
and those who guard their private parts,
Ilaa 'ala azwaajihim au maa malakat aimaanuhum fa-innahum ghairu maluumiin(a)
except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable,
Famaniibtagha waraa-a dzalika fa-uula-ika humul 'aaduun(a)
but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors,
Waal-ladziina hum amaanaatihim wa'ahdihim raa'uun(a)
and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants,
Waal-ladziina hum bisyahaadaatihim qaa-imuun(a)
and those who are upright in their testimonies;
Waal-ladziina hum 'ala shalaatihim yuhaafizhuun(a)
and who take due care of their Prayer:
Uula-ika fii jannaatin mukramuun(a)
all these shall live honourably in the Gardens.
Famaalil-ladziina kafaruu qibalaka muhthi'iin(a)
But what is the matter with the unbelievers who are hurrying towards you
'Anil yamiini wa'anisy-syimaali 'iziin(a)
in crowds, both on the right and on the left?
Ayathma'u kulluumri-in minhum an yudkhala jannata na'iimin
Does everyone of them wish to enter the Garden of Bliss?
Kalaa innaa khalaqnaahum mimmaa ya'lamuun(a)
By no means! They know that which We have created them from.
Falaa uqsimu birabbil masyaariqi wal maghaaribi innaa laqaadiruun(a)
I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests that We have the power
'Ala an nubaddila khairan minhum wamaa nahnu bimasbuuqiin(a)
to replace them by others who would be better than they; and We shall certainly not be overpowered.
Fadzarhum yakhuudhuu wayal'abuu hatta yulaaquu yaumahumul-ladzii yuu'aduun(a)
So leave them to engage in vain talk and to amuse themselves until they come face to face with the Day which they are promised,
Yauma yakhrujuuna minal ajdaatsi siraa'an kaannahum ila nushubin yuufidhuun(a)
the Day on which they will hastily come forth from their graves, as though they were hurrying on to the altars of their deities.
Khaasyi'atan abshaaruhum tarhaquhum dzillatun dzalikal yaumul-ladzii kaanuu yuu'aduun(a)
Their eyes will be downcast and disgrace will overwhelm them. Such is the Day that they were promised.
